Tsleil-Waututh Nation (TWN) collaboration

Working with the Tsleil-Waututh Nation (TWN), Drs. Yassi and Spiegel, along with Dr. Reza Afshari, Dr. Tim Takaro of SFU and SPPH students Armin Mardani and Federico Andrade, recently studied contamination levels of clams and crabs in Burrard Inlet. The purpose of this work was to: 1. understand current contamination levels in shellfish in Burrard Inlet, with specific consideration of human health impacts; 2. help inform potential locations for future TWN shellfish harvests; 3. better understand the risks that continued industrial and port development, including the Trans Mountain pipeline and tanker expansion, pose to TWN’s food sovereignty.
